Biography

Growing up in a very small farm town in the northwest corner of Rhode Island, Katie chose the oboe because she wanted something loud, unusual and simply for the fact that only two other students had signed up for it. Little did she know that for the rest of her life she would be saying “no, it’s not that really big instrument, I think you mean the tuba/bassoon/etc” or “no, not the elbow, the oboe” or “no, I can’t just buy my reeds”.

Private Teaching

I teach the oboe, English horn and reed-making lessons to children, teens and adults. I appreciate that the oboe is a difficult instrument so I try to maintain a fun and supportive environment in lessons. Requiring a great deal of air, muscle, and sensitivity to the delicate reed, I usually prefer to teach children over the age of ten. I also enjoy working with teens and adults. Practicing can be a daunting task to a young player and I try to work with students to develop effective and efficient practicing habits.
